GDPR: General Data Protection Regulation (privacy law)
The General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) or General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) has been the most significant change in the field of data and privacy since 1995. However, not everyone is aware of the content and impact of this law. This is special, because this law was introduced in April 2016 and the consequences for the way in which companies handle personal data are enormous.
'More than half of companies are not prepared for GDPR'
More than half of organizations have not yet started preparing to comply with the European General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). This while the GDPR was introduced in May 2018.
Fines for non-compliance
The consequences for organizations that do not comply with the rules of the new privacy law are enormous. In the beginning you will get rid of it with a written warning, but if you are unable to set up your organization correctly in time, the fines will be high. Such a fine can ultimately amount to 4% of global turnover. So start taking measures as soon as possible.
One European privacy law
Currently, each EU member state has its own privacy law. In the Netherlands this is the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). European privacy legislation has been revised by the European Commission in recent years. The result is the General Data Protection Regulation (in Dutch "AVG").
From directive to regulation
With the introduction of the GDPR / AVG, there is one legislation regarding personal data and data privacy. It is a modernized regulation of the data privacy guidelines compiled in 1995. The internet has changed enormously since the publication of these guidelines. That is why the new privacy law contains important changes compared to those guidelines.
Data Protection Officer (DPO)
According to the GDPR, any organization that processes personal data on a large scale must employ a Data Protection Officer. This supervises compliance with the privacy law in an organization. Among other things, he is responsible for protecting the data that the organization collects and processes and for ensuring that questions and complaints are handled correctly.
